The history of the edifice has not been lost in its conversion from a shipping wharf to a five-star hotel. Many of the original features have been retained throughout Pier One Sydney Harbour, serving as showpieces throughout the hotel’s lobby and corridors. The most impressive of these are the original timber pylons, lining the suites and common areas.
Is this Australia’s most iconic hotel room?
The iconic harbour view suites at Pier One Sydney Harbour
Rooms at Pier One Sydney Harbour vary in layout and design, but all make use of natural light and French designer furnishings. The western side of the building is home to the more luxurious sleeping options, many of which are smack bang on the waterfront.
The most iconic though is the Harbour View Balcony Suite, which lives up to its name. The large deck looks across Walsh Bay to Luna Park, and up to the belly of The Sydney Harbour Bridge. Wake during the night to admire the all too familiar lights of Luna Park reflecting off the water. Furnishings are simple, but elegant, complementing the view. Large sliding doors open the room to the sounds of water lapping against the deck and the horns of Sydney’s ferries.
Nailing the formula when it comes to a hotel bathroom can be difficult, but this luxury hotel has managed it. The Harbour View Balcony Suite’s bathroom is home to a double shower, fitted with eight water jets and a freestanding bath, positioned to take advantage of the water views.
The on-site restaurant, The Gantry, is known as one of Sydney’s finer dining establishments. Expect meats like dry aged lamb and pheasant to be on offer. The Sydney sunset is best enjoyed from an outside table on the pier.
But the standout when it comes to dining at Pier One Sydney Harbour is its outdoor food truck, The Kerrigan. Here, diners can enjoy a range of street food offerings and meats from Black Forest Smokehouse, overlooking Sydney Harbour. The meats are good (as any 14-hour smoked meats should be), but the inventive shaved vegetable and roasted sweet potato sides are the real winners.
Pre, or post-dinner, be sure to enjoy a drink from The Gantry Bar, which serves as the centrepiece of the bustling lobby. The zinc-clad bar oozes class, while the outside pier is ideal for a more casual drink.
One stay at this hotel is not enough – the end result is a hotel experience that will leave you eager to explore every nook and cranny of the historical building.
