Australia's first dedicated art hotel

If you’re an art aficionado, the Henry Jones Art Hotel beckons you! This is Australia’s first dedicated art hotel and blends modern design and contemporary art to create a truly unique guest experience. The artworks in the common areas regularly change, making the hotel a rotating gallery of over 400 pieces.

Housed in the former H. Jones and Co. warehouse, a stay at Henry Jones is as much of an art experience as it is a walk back in time. Rooms showcase original nineteenth-century sandstone walls alongside contemporary furnishings. If you’re looking for some indulgence, book one of the deluxe spa rooms, which feature stainless steel and translucent bathrooms, Kohler elliptical spas, and Molton Brown bathroom amenities.

Hobart accommodation showcasing different Tasmanian personalities

The hotel’s name is an abbreviation of Macquarie Wharf, the wharf on which the hotel sits on. All 114 suites at Macq01 have been dedicated to a different Tasmanian personality, with their story printed on the door to each suite. These range from a French-Canadian bodybuilder who claimed to have been Shirley Temple’s bodyguard, to Saroo Brierley, the real-life inspiration behind the Oscar-winning movie, Lion. These stories give guests a peek into Tasmania’s unique history.

Each suite has been filled with historical artefacts and artwork that continue to tell the story. This includes custom made bed heads and furniture, along with a book that documents the story of all 114 of the hotel’s characters. Premium suites include butler service, with most offering waterfront views.

A Hobart hotel with an antique theme

Hobart may be Australia’s second oldest capital city, but at Hadley’s Orient, you’ll feel as though you’ve been transported to classical England. Built in 1834, this is one of Australia’s oldest boutique hotels and is even listed by the National Trust. This antique theme carries through into the rooms and suites, which feature printed carpets, chesterfield lounges, and ornate wooden furnishings.

Situated in the heart of Hobart, you’ll simply fall smitten with the nearby coffee and breakfast locales that will even have Melburnian’s queuing at the door. If you’d rather feel like a Downton Abbey star, Hadley’s offers a supreme Afternoon Tea from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through to Sunday. Sip piping potted tea and sample morsels of goodness, including Hadley’s freshly baked signature scones. Plain yum!

A Hobart accommodation that feels like home

Lenna is the Indigenous Tasmanian word for ‘house’ or ‘hut’, which is rather fitting as Lenna of Hobart is the ideal haven in which to create a home away from home. Housed in a striking heritage hotel dating back to 1874, Lenna will charm you with its old-world features and timeless elegance. Situated in Battery Point, and literally, just a hop, skip, and a jump from popular Salamanca Place, Lenna truly makes for a convenient stay.

The modern rooms boast either mountain, harbour, or park views, and come with swish marble bathrooms. Here you can indulge in rainfall showers and APPELLES bathroom amenities – divine! There’s no better time at Lenna than 5 p.m. when the traditional drawing room-come-bar serves tasty local plonk at happy hour prices.

Tasmania boasts some pretty class-A restaurants, rivalling those of Sydney and Melbourne. If you’d rather cook up a storm at home though, the in-room kitchen awaits you. We’re talking Smeg appliances, granite bench tops, and a fridge fully stocked with Tasmania’s best beers, wines, and cheeses.

Enjoy a stay in a Hobart mansion

1/4

Arguably the finest dame of Battery Point, Grande Vue Private is a slice of old-world luxury in Hobart. The Queen Ann style mansion was built by Mr Charles Fox as a family home in 1906, but it has since been transformed into one of the city’s finest addresses. Be treated to timeless features including stained glass windows, a grand staircase, and fireplaces, all the while sipping a port in the drawing room.

Feel like a character out of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice in one of the stately rooms, which boast a soft colour palette, antique furnishings, and dreamy marble bathrooms. If you’re lucky, you might score yourself a room with panoramic views of the River Derwent. Although the Grande Vue is nestled in the quiet streets of Battery Point, the vibrant bars and restaurants of Salamanca Place are just a ten-minute walk away.

A Hobart hotel drawing attention

1/4

MONA has well and truly created a name for itself thanks to its unique, and at times provocative, art. This time around though, it’s the gallery’s hotel, MONA Pavilions, which is drawing attention – and for all the right reasons. The eight stunning pavilions are perched on a hill, overlooking the River Derwent, and are each named after Australian artists, including the late Brett Whiteley and Sidney Nolan.

In keeping with MONA’s style, the pavilions offer a contemporary aesthetic, paring neutral tones with bold splashes of red and gold. In the evening, unwind in your super-luxe bathroom appointed with Aesop amenities, then dig into your very own fully-stocked wine bar. Here you can sample Moorilla wine, Moo brew, and Hendrick’s gin – need we say more?
